Snowy Owls Sadness in New Hampshire

Snowy Owls Sadness in New Hampshire

Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) in Seabrook NH. These owls migrate to New England from the Arctic for a few months during late winter, then return home, usually in April. All have gone home, except for one.
And it is sick…While I thought this owl was just hanging out in a grassy area near the beach, it turns out something else was going on.

Today (5/6/22) “On the Wing” on Facebook reported:
“Unfortunately, Seabrook [snowy owl] was observed last night unsteady and looking weak. Today he was easy to approach, drinking water from a puddle and unsteady. Thankfully Steve M. and Johnny H. rescued the bird. Fingers crossed this bird can survive round two of secondary rodenticide (rat poison) treatment. We could physically see the hemorrhaging on the abdomen, wing and legs. Vitamin K shots every 2 hours in hopes of clotting. It’s imperative we find a solution to controlling rodent populations without poison. Please SHARE and help educate the repercussions of rodenticides (rat poison).”

We need to find a better solution to rid our environments of various rodents and pests that do not endanger other wildlife!!

New Ducks For You

New Ducks For You

I went out to capture some winter scenes right after the last blizzard, but found there were many places I could not drive due to the deep snowfall. Someone told me about some ducks hanging out by the Charles River in Dover though, so I decided to take a look. There were over 150 ducks and geese in this one bend in the river. It was pretty amazing!

I caught some great shots of Canada Geese, Mallards, American Black Duck hybrids and two species of duck I'd never seen before. There were 8 Hooded Mergansers and two Common Mergansers across the river on the opposite bank. I had heard of them, but never seen them in the flesh. That was exciting! I just uploaded a few photos, but plenty more are coming. Please take a close look at all these amazing birds in their special plumage and quirky expressions. Thanks for visiting and please leave a comment if you have time.
